The Music of Bob Dylan
Over the years, Dylan has created songs that have changed our lives. The eloquent and emotive lyrics of his songs capture our attention and his voice inspires us to find our own unique place in the world. Dylan’s songwriting skills are both poetic and insightful, with a mastery of language and imagery. He has set a standard in the music industry and is always looked to as an authority in the world of music and literature.
It was Dylan’s first album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, that introduced the world to one of the most influential musical geniuses of the twentieth century. The album marked the end of a tumultuous decade of social change for the United States. It had been a decade of war, protest and the formation of the Civil Rights movement. As Dylan moved away from the folk music scene to become an acoustic solo artist, his music took on a darker, more ironic tone. He began writing songs that were inspired by the lives of those on the periphery of society, particularly from the minority groups. Dylan created many of the most enduring songs of the 1960’s. In 1962, he wrote the song, ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, which was to become an anthem of the anti-war movement. The song highlighted the atrocities that were taking place in Vietnam. A few years later, he wrote ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’’, a song that followed the events of the Civil Rights movement. It was a song of hope for change but also a song of social criticism. In 1964, Dylan’s music received a major boost when he appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. The appearance of Dylan on television, after a few years of declining popularity, increased his already high profile. This was an important turning point in his career, as he received unprecedented acclaim for his music and his powerful and poetic lyrics. By the end of the decade, Dylan had also begun to experiment with electric instruments and soundscapes. ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’ is a song which was released in 1968.
